Intermediate and Advanced Wheel Class

This class is for the student who has acquired basic wheel techniques. With patience, focus and the instructor’s guidance, the potter’s wheel will become your “best friend.” Students will have the opportunity and gain the skill to work either small or large to create original decorative and functional pieces of ceramic art. Students should bring a 2 – 2 ½ gallon bucket with lid, an old towel, and some basic clay tools

All Levels Smoked Clay Drawings I

This is a great clay course for either sculptors or drawers who want to try something new. Do you love to doodle and draw buy have never really handled clay? Or do you love clay but never ventured to draw on it? Then this course is for you. Both clay beginners and clay experts! Bring doodles, sketches or pictures and we’ll show you how to roll out slabs and create lines and shadows with unexpected tools. Then you’ll briefly fire and smoke your piece in the raku kiln. Lo, you’ll have a wall piece to amaze your family and add to your repertoire. Try it – and if you find the process offers other possibilities, take the second session and try more. This session funs June 20 through July 18.

This is the perfect class for anyone interested in beginning an exploration in the ceramic arts. Using both handbuilding and wheel techniques, students will work independently, under the guidance of the instructor, to develop their own goals and create their own unique masterpieces. Intermediate/Advanced Dive In

Dive into an extended exploration of one form. Learn the different ways each form can be built, and which method is effective to achieve the feeling and function that you want. This is your chance to take one form and make it your own.

All Levels Raku and Other Firing Alternatives

Follow the change of seasons with special Raku projects. In this class we will make tea bowls, teapots, or containers for Ikebana (flower arrangements). We will perform a tea ceremony using our own vessels. Various glaze techniques and glaze combinations will be presented for handbuilding and throwing projects (throwing is optional). Individual projects are encouraged. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with alternative firing techniques including shadow slip stencil, horsehair firing, and ferrichloride. It’s summer, a great time to enjoy the outdoor firing.

All Levels Constructing and Carving Clay

First we build it and then we carve it. Using slab, coil and other clay construction techniques, students will build a foundation for experimenting and learning the many techniques of carving clay. Carving can create sculptural work and provide interesting surface treatments. Techniques for many options will be explored.

All Levels You Let it Slip!

This class will explore the use of colored slips as decorative surfaces. Demonstrations of Hakeme, Mishima, slip trailing and other uses of colored slips to enrich the surface of clay will be given.

All Levels Painting with Smoke Clouds

Friday, 9:00am – 12:00pm
Add a little mystery to your hand building experience. Let smoke and fire paint your pots with beautiful smoke clouds. We’ll use several polishing techniques to give your pot the subtle smoothness of a river stone or the high polish of a marble. Experiment using different colors. The fire loves that! Just be prepared to let nature take over. Demos will be designed around the needs of the students. And of course, traditional glazing is still an option. No class July 1st.
